How the W-4 redesign works (2020 and later)
The IRS redesigned the W-4 form in 2020. There are no more allowances. Instead, you use Step 2 for multiple jobs, Step 3 to claim dependents (like the Child Tax Credit), and Step 4(c) to add extra withholding per paycheck. This calculator tells you exactly what to enter in Step 4(c).
How this calculator works
- Annualize wages and deductions from the inputs on the page.
- Apply the 2025 federal tax rules shown on the page to estimate annual income tax after the credit inputs shown on the form.
- Translate the annual target into a per-paycheck withholding adjustment so the W-4 decision is easier to act on.
Example scenario
If a worker expects a refund that is much larger than needed, this calculator helps estimate how much federal withholding can be reduced per paycheck by comparing the annual tax picture with the current withholding plan.
